The Republic of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are in process of adopting/early implementation of road safety strategies and actions plans, in which the importance of modern tools for improving road safety is recognized and emphasized. In both countries, road safety audit and road safety inspection are recognized by legislation as modern tools for improving road safety, but in-depth analysis of road accidents is still not part of national legislation.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), as the custodian of 61 UN legal instruments on inland transport, in particular seven core UN road safety conventions, is invited to provide technical assistance to improve the national road system in Serbia. The UNECE is tasked with analysing the use of road safety management tools and procedures and developing the Recommendations for improving the road safety audit (RSA) and road safety inspection (RSI) system in Serbia and organising a capacity building workshop to share experiences and best practices with all national and regional road safety stakeholders.
The Regional Workshop on Advancing Road Safety: Road Safety Audit and Road Safety Inspection implementation practices will encompass a review of recent updates in UN/international and EU legal instruments on road infrastructure safety management (RISM), an examination of the legislative framework and best national practices for RISM in the Western Balkans and other EU Candidate countries, an analysis of the current situation regarding RISM in Serbia, and recommendations for enhancing the national road safety system in the RISM area. During this event, the Transport Community Treaty and IFI’s regional experiences in RSA/RSI implementation will be presented too. The workshop will be co-organized with the Road Traffic Safety Agency of the Republic of Serbia.
